Synopsis

BRAND NEW POETRY AND THE NOVEL COURSE

This 10-week tutor-led Poetry & The Novel course is a new venture for Ilkley Playhouse and offers the opportunity for participants to extend their interest in poetry.

The basis of the course is to provide an opportunity for participants to read and discuss poems that are inspired by the same themes as the two pairs of novels:

‘History of Mr. Polly’ and ‘Howard's End’

Sons and Lovers’ and ‘Portrait of the Artist

There will be ample opportunity for course members to read poems of their own choice, related to the ideas in the books. It would be helpful, but not essential, to have read these novels.

Course members will discuss which sort of novels they like, why the two chosen novels are paired, the importance and significance of titles and first pages. There will also be the chance to learn about the lives of the authors and the social issues that were important at the time.

In terms of poetry, there will be readings of poems that deal with some of same ideas that are dramatised in the novels such as parental influence, education, the houses we live in, the jobs we do, how we escape.

Examples of appropriate poets:

John Masefield and Philip Larkin on escape from work and the city

Tony Harrison on parents and upbringing

John Donne on love and desire

The intention is that the course should be enjoyable as well as informative.

The ten-week course will begin on Thursday 24th January 2019 with a week off for half term It will be held in the Sheridan Suite at Ilkley Playhouse from 10.30am – 12 noon.

The cost of the course is £70, payable in advance via our box office or online. Please let the theatre know if you wish to enrol no later than January 11th.
