Synopsis

Mad, Bad and Sad

What prompts writers to explore the darker side of life in their work and what prompts us as readers to enjoy it?

Join novelists Martyn Bedford, Clare Fisher and Mandy Sutter as they discuss that question and read us extracts from the darkest parts of their own latest work.

Prison life, suicide, murder, alcoholism, racism, bullying, depression, death and the supernatural are all present – and that’s just for starters!

Martyn Bedford is the author of five novels for adults and three for young adults. His first solo short story collection, Letters Home, was described in the Yorkshire Post as ‘a dazzling read.’

Clare Fisher’s first novel, All the Good Things, eagerly snapped up by the literary world, was described in the Guardian as ‘a sparky and unsettling debut’.

Bush Meat is Mandy Sutter’s second novel, described by Booker-shortlisted Alison Moore as ‘disquieting, touching and darkly humorous.’
