Synopsis
by Anton Chekhov, adapted by Conor McPherson
Directed by Yvette Huddleston
This amateur production is presented by arrangement with NICK HERN BOOKS
“What news could there possibly be? Everything is the same as ever, except worse.”
It’s the turn of the 20th century and in the heat of summer on a rundown country estate deep in rural Ukraine, Sonya and her Uncle Vanya while away their days, occasionally visited by their near neighbour Astrov, the local doctor. Each day is very much the same as the next.
However, when Sonya’s father professor Serebryakov returns with his restless young second wife Yelena announcing that he plans to sell the house and surrounding land, long-buried emotions and resentments begin to rise to the surface with far-reaching consequences.
Award-winning playwright Conor McPherson’s new adaptation of Anton Chekhov’s classic comedy-drama brings freshness, vitality and contemporary resonance to a story of regret, missed chances and hidden passions, all laced with playful humour, warmth and humanity.
