Synopsis

by Steven Moffat

Directed by Steve Mason

This amateur production is presented by arrangement with NICK HERN BOOKS.

“We’re dying of manners. We’re under siege from personal embarrassment.  And why? Because it might hurt her feelings. How did we get here?? This is not sane!”

Unfriend noun. A person, often met on holiday, who doesn’t understand that “let’s keep in touch” means “goodbye”. Sometimes, a murderer.

When Peter and Debbie meet the super-friendly, lifeloving, Trump-supporting Elsa on a cruise, they politely agree to stay in contact – because that’s the polite thing to do, isn’t it? But when Elsa invites herself to stay a few months later, they decide to do some research into their uninvited guest… and uncover Elsa’s shocking hidden past.

Steven Moffat’s play takes a hilarious look at middle-class England’s disastrous instinct to always appear nice. How do you protect your family from mortal peril without seeming…well, a tad impolite?

Steven Moffat is the writer of many hit TV shows, such as Sherlock, Dracula, The Time Traveler’s Wife, Coupling, Douglas is Cancelled and many of the best and most loved episodes of Doctor Who. The Unfriend is his first play.
