Synopsis

This tutor-led course will follow the pattern of previous successful courses in that it will combine the study of two related novels with the reading of a range of poetry inspired by the themes of the novels.

This term's theme will be: Representations of marriage in Victorian literature.

Marriage, which has been the bourne of so many narratives, is still a great beginning.’ (George Eliot).

The course will consider Victorian depictions of marriage in both prose and verse.

We shall look at three novels in particular: Eliot’s 'Daniel Deronda', Anne Bronte’s 'The Tenant of Wildfell Hall’ and Hardy’s ‘Return of the Native’.

We shall also be reading from Hardy’s poetry and the sonnet sequences of Dante Gabriel Rossetti and George Meredith.
