Synopsis

This tutor-led course will follow the pattern of previous successful courses in that it will combine the study of two related novels with the reading of a range of poetry inspired by the themes of the novels.

The two novels this time will be ' Things Fall Apart' by Chinua Achebe - the Nigerian writer described as the father of African literature - and George Eliot's final work 'Daniel Deronda. '

Issues of personal and national identity will continue to be explored, more especially the concept of 'Englishness'.

This will provide the opportunity to read a wide range of poetry, from Shakespeare to Derek Walcott, from Daniel Defoe to Seamus Heaney.
