Synopsis
by Jez Butterworth
This amateur production is presented by arrangement with NICK HERN BOOKS
Directed by Paul Chewins
On a moonless night in August when the sea trout are ready to run, a man brings his new girlfriend to the remote family cabin where he has come for the fly-fishing since he was a boy. But she's not the only woman he has brought here – or indeed the last...
The River is a piece of gorgeously sensitive writing; teasing, haunted and hushed. It is utterly beguiling in its subtle deconstruction of the way we conduct ourselves in relationships - the facades erected, the lies told, the declarations made, the pasts conveniently ignored.
Are we witnessing a ghost story, a gothic thriller, a parable? The River perplexes, the audience is never allowed to settle, never allowed to get a foothold on logic or reality.
The Wildman provides the perfect intimate atmosphere for this beautiful play.
“I may bring other women here, to this place, and I may tell them I love them … but they will be impostors. And I will be a ghost.”
The production contains strong language.
