This is an amateur production by arrangement with Nick Hern Books.

Written by Joan Lindsay, adapted by Tom Wright

Valentine’s Day 1900. Appleyard College, founded to bring English values to  Australian girls, arranges for the girls and some staff to go for a picnic expedition to the remote Hanging Rock.

Some girls abscond from the group and are last seen heading towards the beckoning Rock. In 2021, 5 performers struggle to solve the mystery of the missing girls and their teacher. Past and present merge as euphoria and terror reverberate through the community.

The play brilliantly explores many themes including:  man’s attempts to tame nature; England and Australia; unspoken desires; and feelings so deep that they are hard to articulate.

 “I know you’re there….Miranda? Miranda?”

(Please stay for our Q and A session if you'd like to discuss this intriguing production further)

Picnic at Hanging Rock first came to widespread attention following the award laden film made by Peter Weir in 1975. This play had its premiere in Australia in 2016, and in the UK the following year, to rave reviews.

N.B. the performance itself will be under 90 minutes with no interval. For anyone wishing to stay for the Q and A session, there will be a short break after the performance.
