Synopsis

Playhouse Creatures

By April De Angelis

This amateur production of 'Playhouse Creatures' is presented by special arrangement with SAMUEL FRENCH LTD

In 1669, following the restoration of the monarchy, England under King Charles II was setting about re-colouring the land after years of austere puritan government.  For the first time women were allowed to act on stage and actresses became early pioneers of the struggle to find a place for women in a male-dominated society.

Five women of different ages, experience and character struggling against the odds to establish themselves in a theatre company are bound together by their pasts and the present; but what of the future?  Are they all looking for the same things and how far will the men in their lives influence their ability to get it?  A bawdy, comic and ultimately moving account of  the precarious lives of Restoration actresses.

Directed by Dick Hebbert
